Silverview: A Novel Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. T. Lawrence -- It's brilliant! : I've just read chapter 1. I can tell it's going to be brilliant. John le Carré hasn't lost a beat. Only he has the ability to craft a mesmerizing atmosphere of British Intelligence that keeps you on the edge of your seat, yet still compelling you to linger over his wonderful use of words and detailed application of adjectives. I'm thrilled to journey into this novel. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Traveller Jim -- The Final Curtain : A fitting finale. I read it over 24 hours, picking it up each time because it was vintage Le Carre - a joy to read. And putting it down because I didn’t want to finish it - knowing this was the last read. Now it is over. A joy to remember. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dennis E. Henley -- Fathers and sons. Love and betrayal. Le Carré is back. : I was 30% into Joe Abercrombie's The Wisdom of Crowds when John Le Carré's Silverview popped up on my Kindle. Do I switch books now or finish the excellent "Age of Madness" series? ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from HarryLime -- Passed the “sample” test - 5 Stars! : Knowing that Le Carré wrote this late in life, and that it was published posthumously, I did what I often do, I ordered a sample to check out Silverview’s vibe. Opening chapter, hmmm, his prose is less ornate and nuanced but a cool mystery immediately introduces itself. Next chapter, wow his dialogue is still brilliant and full of elaborate gamesmanship. Next chapter, yikes this is good stuff, better buy the book! Fellow Le Carré fans, I wasn’t particularly keen on his last two novels but this really is a return to form. Highly recommended. Five stars! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Grant11955 -- In it’s own way the equal to George Smiley books : In it’s own way the equal to George Smiley books. I loved the Smiley books and had difficulty appreciating any of the author’s later books which I thought were lesser efforts. This one stands on its own as at least the equal to the early books. One should not compare the two. This one has small characters which keep growing in importance. The books have large characters how do even Smikey was large in a shirt and said he was a master spy. This one has a flawed bookseller as a main character. Subtle character and plot development here . Masterful prose. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
- from RTM -- TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : Superb Final Novel by Le Carre ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- from Bernie Bernbaum -- VINE VOICE : Certainly not the Best Le Carre ( 3.0 out of 5 stars )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Summer -- Not a leCarre’ book : John LeCarre has been my favorite author since the state. His books were always so rich in description, deep character studies and of course a story line that would turn and twist on a dime. I was truly dishearten by the death of the author. No one can take his place or write like he does. While Silverview may have been conceived by lsCarre, he didn’t write it, nor was his plot developed,as,he would have done. Instead, the book seemed to follow the minute by minute action of a 2nd level character who had little to do with the real story that was never really flushed. One minute we’re are building to a climax and in a turn of a page, it is over. Very much let down. I had so hoped John’s work would have gone on and on. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from The Cookster -- The last (and, sadly, somewhat disappointing) completed novel of a master craftsman. : Rating: 2.4/5 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martin Jones -- The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity : Silverview is John Le Carré’s posthumously published 2021 novel about a City trader who plots an escape to bookshop ownership in a quiet English seaside town. But once installed in his new shop, he inadvertently becomes involved in the affairs of a disenchanted former spy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Si -- Poor : Have to say this is a poorly plotted story populated with a combination of thinly drawn characters (Julian and Lily) and the implausible and ridiculous Edward who is supposed to be some sort of super spy but has the most absurd line in dialogue and even more silly tradecraft. There's a kernel of a story about an incoherent British foreign policy, declining empire and illegal wars but it amounts to little more than a few observations. Better off re-reading some of his classic novels than waste time on this. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from P. McCLEAN -- As always, a human look at the world of intelligence agencies : John Le Carré’s last novel, does not disappoint. It gives the same, practical insight into the British intelligence world his readers will be familiar with from his earlier books. He shows the life of an organisation, not only doing the job it was created to do, but also concerned about how things look and who is going to be the fall-guy if anything goes wrong, and worried about its position vis-à-vis inter-agency rivalry and blame culture. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric Lee -- Not his best work, but le Carré’ can still tell a great story : Silverview, John le Carré’s final book, has all the elements that made his earlier books such fantastic reads. It has former spies, current spies, hard-nosed cynics, naive innocents, betrayed husbands, faithless wives, several plot strands that come together (mostly) and – did I mention the spies? It includes the author’s trademark dislike of the Americans, especially their intelligence services, which places him in the long tradition of many British writers, most famously Graham Greene.
