  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Loveislikely -- A Total Gem : I’ve been a “foodie” my entire 47 years (first word was cookie, second word was milk) but only recently learned about Laurie Colwin from a friend who loves her writing. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from E. Rhoades -- Great book. Great Author. : I actually order this book for myself for Christmas. I read the first book, aptly named "Home Cooking" for a class. It was one of the best food books I have read in a long time. She's very descriptive and makes you want to cook all the recipes that she talks about. She talks about how important home cooking is to the family. That's not to say she leaves out anything about friends. She discusses them as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. L. Vernon -- A real treat. : I sent this is a gift, as it is one of my all-time favorite books about food, and just plain living. I reread it every year, and it always makes me feel as though the world is a better place after having read it. Laurie Colwin wrote these essays for Gourmet Magazine a long time ago, but they will live forever for me. A real treat. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wanda A. Adams -- So much more than a cookbook : I found Colwin's original book of cooking essays at a used book sale. I had to order the second and I sincerely mourn her too-early death as I'll never find another. This is the kind of food writing I love: focused not on recipes (which are a dime a dozen, or less) but on experiences, views, quirky prejudices. James Beard's "Delights and Prejudices" was such a book and this is worthy to sit near his classic on my bookshelf. Bottom line: Colwin makes me want to get into the kitchen and work out some of my own crazy ideas. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from PatFirey -- Comfort reading : I got this book for myself. The chapters are short and entertaining. Right now I am keeping it in my car so I can read a chapter or two while I'm waiting. The author is a more adventurous cook than I am but I've picked up a lot of good tips and a couple recipes I would like to try. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Linda -- Suggest this to your book club- it's a new genre for many : Last night I was at a book club meeting and I admitted that I liked to read cookbooks. Everyone thought that was odd, but they have not read Laurie Colwin. Her books tell the story of her life with cooking, and just happen to have some great recipes. It's really interesting to read about her take on healthy food from a few decades ago in comparison to what we think now. Her love of food and family shines in this book and has encouraged me to read her other non-cook books as well. I've also started trying her recipes. Most are simple, but elegant. So far every one I've tried has been a hit. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Arbitress -- Very Entertaining Recipe Book : I was delighted with the text and the story line this author creates as she describes her process and imparts her recipes. Some of her passages had me laughing out loud. The recipes I have tried so far do not disappoint. Laurie Colwin was a treasure and a delight, gone too soon. Now I'm interested to read her novels as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Katherine Hays Manning -- Best cook book ever : This is the best book ever. It is like having a conversation with your friend who cooks amazing meals ( Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GKH -- The best therapy : Reading Laurie is like reading letters from a dear friend. A collection of recipes and essays instead of the usual recipes and photos. The recipes are gorgeous but its the stories that go with them that warms the heart and makes you dander into the kitchen to recreate. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jack Buckley -- Witty Wise and Worthy : All the hype is true! This book is hugely entertaining, delightfully down to earth and wonderfully practical. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mu Lane -- Five Stars : Almost s good as her first book, but not quite. Still an interesting read. Shame she died so young. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Helen Bird -- Gorgeous writing from a much missed writer. : Wonderful stuff. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2020 )
