Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora [A Cookbook] Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from LiVoanah -- A phenomenal piece of work : This book is more than just poetry; it has literature that is so deep and majestic. Not to mention there is a playlist that suits each chapter. I haven't read the other sections, but I cannot wait to check out the spirituality chapter as I collect crystals and create wellness within my surroundings. I just read the first poem of the first chapter, and I'm blown away by how deep it is. Well done. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amijazzy -- Highly Recommend : This is an awesome cookbook with some great recipes......however it is more than just a cookbook. The book has some wonderful stories, history, photographs, and artwork. Definitely will be buying another one as a Christmas gift!! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christa Banister -- So Much More Than Your Requisite Recipe Book : Ever notice how the best recipes are more than a laundry list of ingredients? The ones that truly stand the test of time have meaningful stories behind them that are passed on from generation to generation. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JT Cooks -- A cultural text with a cookbook inside : Like most of the other reviewers have written, this book is so much more than a cookbook. Filled with historical essays, personal essays, poetry, visual art, self-care guides and so much more. Think of any living black chef or person in food media that you know, and chances are they have a hand in this beautiful book. As a fan of Dr. Jessica B. Harris, I appreciated her essay, but I also learned so much about the diaspora from the other writers. It's important for all American cooks to understand that the core of our cuisine comes from those brought here in chains. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from pixie prince -- Beautiful Book, Delicious Recipes! : Black Food, Stories, Art & Recipes From Across the African Diaspora, Edited and Curated by Bryant Terry is a beautiful book, artfully and satisfyingly curated by Chef Terry. The recipes are approachable and exciting: Amanda Yee’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Pickled Persimmon Pears fill a “Late Fall Shoebox Lunch” deliciously! This is one of the best uses of Fuyu persimmons. Don’t forget to try Jocelyn’s Cinnamon Roll Pound Cake, this is almost a cross between a cinnamon roll and a pound cake but better. Kalisa Marie Martin takes Saltfish Fritters to a new level. Cooking the tomatoes, garlic, and scotch bonnets with the desalted codfish, and then using the mixture to make the fritters, brilliant! My Jamaican mother-in-law is in a for a treat. I will serve this to her along with Dr. Goffe’s Jamaican-style Ackee & Callaloo Patties. Jamaican beef patties will always be a family favorite, but this dish captures many favorites and wraps them in a flaky, tasty pastry crust. We don’t have callaloo but collard greens are a good substitute. There are so many more recipes to try, if you don’t have a lot of extra ingredients on hand, make Kia Damon’s Sweet Potato Grits, delicious with fish, or just with butter. I’ve received a free copy from Ten Speed Press in exchange for a free and unbiased review. Buy this book, the writing is inspirational, the photographs are elegant, the recipes are so tasty!
